David Williams says living in London is suiting him |
The band, Son of Dork, hit the charts at number three with their debut single Ticket Outta Loserville and its Welsh guitarist is loving every minute of it.
David Williams, 19, from Abertillery in Blaenau Gwent, was picked by former boy band Busted member James Bourne for the role.
Williams has already hit the headlines after being romantically linked with rocker Kelly Osbourne.
But he dismissed stories of a relationship as "just hype".
The five-piece rock band have already captured the hearts of thousands of teenage girls, many of them former Busted fans.
"It's awesome, totally insane," he said.
"I can't believe it, one minute we were in the studio making the album and the next thing we are on CD:UK with loads of screaming fans.
"It is pretty cool and the fans are really cool too, although some are really insane.
The band formed following the break up of Busted |
But he admitted the band is still in its early days.
"It is quite scary how big Busted were - we have got some big shoes to fill," he said.
So is there any truth in the rumours that he is dating Kelly Osbourne, daughter of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne?
"Apparently I broke up with her today according to the papers - I just wish I was that high profile," he said.
"We are just friends - I've met her three times.
"We met in the Smash Hits party, she and Jack her brother were sitting near us but I didn't speak to her anymore than any of the other boys.
David denies any romantic involvement with Kelly Osbourne |
"She is a cool girl - a really nice girl, we've talked about it and she just thinks it's really funny.
"I mean it is totally surreal - she's Ozzy Osbourne's daughter!"
Williams was among hundreds who auditioned for the band whose second single is due out next month.
"My friend started seeing this girl who knows James (Bourne) and she heard that he was setting up a band, and I was thinking - I can do that," he explained.
"So I met him and hung with him and we got close and then I went to the auditions and I think they picked me because I was the loudest."
He moved from south Wales to London immediately.
Mobbed
"I used to spend a lot of time in Cardiff and Newport when I was living at home, so living in London is really suiting me, although I am looking forward to coming home for Christmas," he said.
"Last time I was home, I walked though town and there were about eight girls who recognised me.
"I went to Tesco and someone asked me for my autograph and then all these other people were there and the staff - it was weird, I was being mobbed in Tesco."
Williams said he would love to come back to Cardiff.
"I'd really like to play at Coopers Field because I remember seeing Green Day playing there in 2002 and it was awesome."
